Before Time magazine christened her "The Body" and put her on the cover of a 1986 issue, Elle Macpherson was just an Aussie beach babe who was trying to earn a little money to help fund her college studies in law. But ask any good model scout; a face and frame like that belongs in front of the camera, not in a courtroom. With perma-tanned curves of the 36-25-35 variety and golden blond highlights that predate Gisele's death grip on the honey hue, Macpherson dominated the editorial world in the eighties and early nineties, scoring iconic covers with Elle and Sports Illustrated that earned her one-name-only status alongside the likes of Naomi, Cindy, and Linda.

One successful lingerie line and two kids with playboy financier Arki Busson later, the model is entering a new phase this fall—that of reality show host. NBC's Fashion Star is a design competition in which unknown talent make clothes for the runway and real life—"projects," if you will, that are overseen by a supermodel with help from some experienced mentors, including Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie, and John Varvatos. It's a little déjà vu-ish, sure, but "it's not Project Runway," Elle declares emphatically. There's really no contest, anyway. While a certain blonde German upstart declared herself "The Body" in a 2006 Victoria's Secret ad, that title is, and will always be, spoken for. A hearty "G'day, mate," to your "Auf weidersehen."
