Scientists first laboratory injected sperm able to fertilize an egg. They took a sample of tissue of the testes of mice and stimulated to produce sperm.
Although still at an early stage, recent studies evoke the hope that the boys who remain sterile after aggressive therapy for the treatment of cancer, they can become fathers.
They took sample from the testes of mice and then added combination of proteins and other substances as would have induced the production of sperm and their growth. Laboratory grown sperm that was used for fertilization of egg cells succeed to get 12 small mice that continued to proliferate.
Many scientists try to produce sperm from testicular tissue in a test tube, but only a doctor Ogava find the right recipe. He plans to apply the same technique in men.
If it proves successful, the boys the day before chemotherapy, could froze tissue sample of their testis, the same can be later used for the production of sperm.
Scientists also hope that solving the mystery of sperm production might contribute to the production of new drugs and other therapy for treatment of infertility.
